What happened

North American Bus Industries (NABI) is recalling certain 2010 and 2011 Model 416 transit buses manufactured between September 1, 2010, and February 28, 2011, that are equipped with Cummins ISL diesel engines. The V-band clamp assembly that connects parts of the exhaust system can fail because the T-bolt may fracture under stress or load, causing the clamp to loosen and disconnect. If this happens, hot exhaust gases can vent before exiting the tailpipe, creating a risk of fire. In some cases, if both clamps fail, the entire diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter housing may detach and become a road hazard.

NABI is working with Cummins to identify and notify affected owners. Repairs will be performed free of charge by authorized Cummins dealers. The recall began on October 10, 2011. Owners may contact Cummins at 1-812-377-5000 or NABI at 1-256-831-4296 for information about the recall.

Hazard

IF THE INLET OR OUTLET SECTIONS DISCONNECT, HOT EXHAUST GASES CAN VENT PRIOR TO EXITING THE TAILPIPE, CREATING THE RISK OF COMBUSTION AND A FIRE. IF BOTH CLAMPS FAIL, THERE IS A RISK IN SOME APPLICATIONS THAT THE DOC/DPF HOUSING MAY DETACH COMPLETELY, CREATING A ROAD HAZARD.

What should I do?

NABI IS WORKING WITH CUMMINS TO IDENTIFY AND NOTIFY OWNERS OF THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. REPAIRS WILL BE PERFORMED BY AUTHORIZED CUMMINS DEALERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 10, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CUMMINS AT 1-812-377-5000 OR NABI AT 1-256-831-4296.
