What happened

Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling certain 2021-2022 C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL, E-Class Coupe/Convertible, CLS, AMG GT 4-door Coupe, and EQS vehicles equipped with a heated leather steering wheel. A software error in the hand detection control unit can prevent the system from detecting when the driver's hands are off the steering wheel while using the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC system. This deactivated hands-off detection disables important safety features, including warnings to grab the steering wheel and the Active Emergency Stop Assist that can call first responders, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

To remedy the issue, dealers will update the hand detection control unit software at no cost. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 6, 2022. Affected consumers should contact Mercedes-Benz USA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 to schedule a dealer appointment, referencing recall number 2022040010.
