Yamaha Motor Corporation is recalling certain model year 2009-2013 YZF-R1 motorcycles and 2012-2013 XTZ12 motorcycles manufactured between October 2008 and August 2013. The headlights in these motorcycles can malfunction due to a defect where heat from normal bulb use causes connections to expand and arc in the socket, which can overheat and melt the socket. A failed headlight reduces the rider's ability to see the road and makes the motorcycle less visible to other drivers, increasing crash risk.
Yamaha will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlight socket at no cost. The recall began on March 10, 2014. Affected consumers should contact Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926.
