What happened

Yamaha is recalling certain 2009-2011 VMX17 (V-MAX) motorcycles manufactured between September 2008 and April 2011, including YB, YCB, ZR, ZCR AG, and ACG variants. The affected motorcycles have a defective oil pump that can malfunction when high oil pressure builds up inside it, causing oil to stop pumping through the engine. This can result in severe engine damage and cause the engine to stall and fail to restart, increasing the risk of a crash with injury or death.

The safety recall began on October 21, 2011. Yamaha dealers will replace the oil pump free of charge. Owners of affected motorcycles should contact Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926.
