What happened

Porta has recalled all residential elevators equipped with plastic electro mechanical door locks (EMDLs) due to a hazard where the locks can allow landing doors to open before the elevator car arrives, creating a serious fall risk for people attempting to board. The affected locks are plastic generation 1, 2, 3, or 4 models installed at the upper corner on the elevator side of each landing door, identifiable by a UL or ETL label on the EMDL box printed with "Porta Inc."

According to the recall, affected consumers should immediately stop using elevators with these plastic locks and contact their elevator service company to have the plastic locks replaced with metal parts.
