  • Brand Hewlett-Packard Company, of Palo Alto, Calif.

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Hewlett-Packard and the CPSC have announced a recall of lithium-ion rechargeable battery packs used in various HP and Compaq notebook computers. The recalled batteries, which were manufactured between March 2004 and September 2004, can experience an internal short that causes the battery cells to overheat and melt or char the plastic case, creating a burn and fire hazard. Consumers can identify recalled batteries by checking for bar code labels starting with GC, IA, L0, or L1. The recall affects numerous HP Pavilion, Compaq Presario, Compaq Evo, and other Compaq and HP notebook models listed in the announcement.

According to the record, consumers who own affected notebook computers should stop using the recalled batteries immediately and contact HP to arrange for a free replacement battery through the Battery Replacement program website or by calling HP. While waiting for the replacement battery to arrive, consumers should remove the recalled battery and use only the AC adapter to power their notebook computer.
