What happened

Daimler Vans USA is recalling certain 2015-2017 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles due to a defect in the driver-side frontal air bag inflator module. The inflators may explode during a crash when the air bag deploys because the propellant can degrade after prolonged exposure to humidity and temperature changes. If an explosion occurs, sharp metal fragments could strike the driver or other occupants, potentially causing serious injury or death.

To remedy the problem, dealers will replace the affected driver air bag module at no cost to owners. The recall began March 15, 2019. Owners of affected vehicles should contact Daimler Vans USA customer service at 1-877-762-8267.
