What happened

Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling certain 2012 and 2014 i-MiEV vehicles because their front passenger air bag inflators may rupture during a crash. The rupture can occur due to propellant degradation after long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes. If an inflator ruptures when the air bag deploys, metal fragments may strike vehicle occupants and cause serious injury or death.

To address this issue, MMNA will notify owners and replace the front passenger air bag inflator at no charge. The recall began on March 10, 2017. Affected owners should contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820 and reference recall number SR-17-001 to arrange the replacement.
