What happened

Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling certain 2011-2012 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured between August 26, 2010, and June 1, 2012, as well as 2016 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured between January 11, 2016, and July 8, 2016. The lift gate support outer tube on these vehicles may have insufficient anti-corrosion treatment, allowing the tube to corrode when exposed to salt and water. If corrosion occurs, the gas that assists with lift gate operation may escape rapidly, causing the lift gate to fall suddenly and potentially injuring someone.

To address this issue, Mitsubishi dealers will replace the lift gate supports on affected vehicles at no charge. The recall began on January 20, 2017. If you own one of these vehicles, you should contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820 to arrange the replacement, and reference recall number SR-16-011.

Hazard

If the outer tube corrodes, there may be a rapid loss of the gas used to provide lift assistance, causing the lift gate to fall suddenly, increasing the risk of injury.

What should I do?
