What happened

BMW is recalling certain 2015 M5 sedans, M6 coupes, M6 convertibles, and M6 Gran Coupes manufactured between September and December 2014. These vehicles have driveshafts that may have been inadequately welded during manufacturing. If a driveshaft fractures due to this improper weld, the car could lose drive to the rear wheels and propulsion, increasing crash risk. Additionally, if the vehicle is turned off and the driver exits without applying the parking brake, the car may roll.

BMW will notify owners of the recall, which was expected to begin in September 2016. Dealers will inspect and replace the driveshaft at no charge if necessary. Owners of affected vehicles should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Hazard

Due to the improper weld, the driveshaft may fracture and fail, causing loss of drive to the rear wheels and a loss of propulsion. Additionally, if the car is turned off and exited without the parking brake applied, the car may roll. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

What should I do?

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the driveshaft, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during September 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
