What happened

BMW is recalling certain 2011 X5 and X6 models manufactured between April and November 2010. The front driveshaft universal joint in these vehicles may allow water and debris to enter and damage the joint, potentially causing it to fail. If the front universal joint fails, the front wheels would not receive power, reducing traction and increasing crash risk. Continued driving with a broken front universal joint may also damage other vehicle components.

BMW will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the front driveshaft at no charge. Owners of affected vehicles should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to arrange the replacement.
