What happened

Chrysler is recalling certain 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured between March 29, 2003 and July 3, 2003, and 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured between May 27, 2003 and May 20, 2004. These vehicles may have a defect in the air bag electronic control module caused by electrical noise that exceeds the component's tolerance levels. This defect can cause the front air bags, side air bags, and seatbelt pretensioners to deploy unexpectedly while the vehicle is being driven, which increases the risk of injury and the possibility of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners at no cost, and dealers will replace the air bag electronic control module and side impact sensors as necessary. The recall began on May 5, 2016. Affected consumers should contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 to have their vehicle serviced. Chrysler's reference number for this recall is R60.
