What happened

Chrysler is recalling certain 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles, as well as 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with eight-speed automatic transmissions. These vehicles may fail to adequately warn drivers when the door is opened and the transmission is not in PARK, potentially allowing drivers to exit the vehicle while it remains in gear. This creates a risk that drivers could be struck and injured by their own vehicle if they attempt to leave while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.

Chrysler will notify owners and provide a free software update at authorized dealers to reduce the risk of vehicle rollaway. The recall began June 24, 2016. Owners should contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 to arrange the update, referencing recall number S27. Chrysler also identified in October 2016 that some previously repaired vehicles did not receive complete software updates and will renotify those owners for an additional software update.

Note: On October 19, 2016 Chrysler identified some previously repaired vehicles did not receive the complete software updates. Chrysler will renotify the affected owners, and dealers will update the software again.
