2015 PETERBILT 587; 2014 PETERBILT 587

  • Brand PETERBILT

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

PACCAR Inc. is recalling certain 2014-2015 Peterbilt 587 vehicles manufactured between November 11, 2013, and March 7, 2014, due to a software malfunction in the fog lighting system. When a driver turns on the high beams, the fog lights are designed to turn off, but after 10 seconds they may automatically turn back on. When both the fog lights and high beams are illuminated simultaneously, the combined light output can exceed federal safety limits and may blind oncoming drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

PACCAR will notify owners of affected vehicles, and authorized Peterbilt dealers will reprogram the Cab Electronic Control Unit (CECU) at no cost to correct the malfunction so the fog lights will not activate when the high beams are on. The recall began in May 2014. Owners of potentially affected vehicles should contact Peterbilt at 1-800-473-8372 and reference recall number 414-E.

Hazard

If both the fog lamps and high beams are illuminated at the same time, oncoming traffic may be blinded by the excessive light, increasing the risk of a crash.

What should I do?

PACCAR will notify owners, and dealers will update the Cab Electronic Control Unit (CECU) to correct the programming so the fog lights do not come on when the high beams are on, free of charge. The recall began in May 2014. Owners may contact Peterbilt at 1-800-473-8372. Paccar's number for this recall is 414-E.
