What happened

PACCAR is recalling certain 2014 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks manufactured between May 1 and May 17, 2013. The affected Kenworth models are T170, T270, T370, T470, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900, while the affected Peterbilt models are 330, 337, 348, 365, 367, 382, 384, 386, 388, 389, 389K, 567, 579, and 587. These vehicles have a defective ignition switch that can cause the starter to engage when a key is only partially inserted, before the key is turned.

This defect poses a safety hazard because it could cause unintended engine startup, potentially injuring someone working in the engine compartment. For trucks with standard transmissions, unintended engine startup could also cause unexpected vehicle movement, resulting in personal injury or a crash. PACCAR dealers will replace the affected ignition switches at no cost to owners. Owners of Kenworth trucks should contact Kenworth at 1-425-828-5000 (recall campaign 13KWF), and owners of Peterbilt trucks should contact Peterbilt at 1-940-591-4000 (recall campaign 0513-E).
