What happened

Yakima Products is recalling certain model Flipside Hitch Mount Bicycle Carriers (part number 8002426) that are designed to transport up to four bicycles on vehicles. The carriers have a feature allowing the mast to lower to the side for trunk or hatch access. A defect exists where the pull pin that enables this lowering feature can work out of position, causing the entire unit to fall to the side while bicycles are loaded.

When the carrier falls to the side, bicycles can hit the ground and be ejected from the mount onto the road, creating a hazard to other vehicles and potentially causing crashes or injuries. Yakima will notify owners and provide a repair kit at no charge. Owners should contact Yakima at 1-971-249-7503 to receive the repair kit.

Hazard

THE UNIT CAN FALL TO THE SIDE DURING USE. THIS COULD LEAD TO A BICYCLE HITTING THE GROUND AND EJECTING FROM THE MOUNT ONTO THE ROAD, CREATING A ROAD HAZARD TO OTHER VEHICLES WHICH COULD POSSIBLY RESULT IN A CRASH OR INJURY TO PERSONS OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE.

What should I do?

YAKIMA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND PROVIDE A REPAIR KIT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 29, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT YAKIMA AT 1-971-249-7503.
