Sutphen Corporation has recalled certain model year 2004 through 2010 SPH fire trucks manufactured between January 2004 and January 2010 that are equipped with Series 60 Detroit Diesel or C-13 Caterpillar engines. The defect involves vibration in the driveline that can cause premature failure of the universal joints, which increases the risk of a crash. The vibration is caused by Detroit Diesel engines being mounted low in the frame on pre-2007 models, and by driveline angles being slightly out of alignment on post-2007 models due to a new suspension and frame design.
Sutphen will repair affected fire trucks free of charge. The safety recall began on March 8, 2010. Owners of affected vehicles should contact Sutphen at 1-866-287-5549 to arrange for the repair.
