Is my product affected?

Stab Proof Vest ‘STABVEST’ or NEW STAB VESTS

  • Brand Unknown

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

The recalled STABVEST or NEW STAB VESTS are sleeveless vests with front and back panels made from fourteen layers of yellow aramid (Kevlar) material sourced from surplus German Army flak jackets, secured with velcro straps over the shoulders and sides. The vest does not provide adequate protection against knife stab attacks, as the aramid layers can be easily parted and cut by a knife even at very low force levels below 10 joules of energy. The product lacks any instructions or warnings and comes only in a cardboard box.

Authorities in the United Kingdom have ordered the product withdrawn from the market and recalled from consumers. The source document does not specify what remedy an affected consumer should pursue.

Hazard

The product poses a serious risk of injuries because fourteen layers of aramid are not sufficient on their own to give protection against even a very low level (below 10 joules of energy) knife stab attack. It is not suitable (without treatment such as resin bonding or the addition of chain mail) for use as knife protection as the fibres can easily be parted and cut by a knife.
