What happened

Universal Security Instruments is recalling two models of combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms because they can fail to alert consumers to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, which is an odorless, colorless, poisonous gas that poses a risk of poisoning or death. The recall affects Model MPC322S with battery backup (manufacturing date code 2017JUN09) and Model MPC122S hardwired alarms with battery backup (manufacturing date code 2017JUN02). Both models are marked with "UNIVERSAL SECURITY INSTRUMENTS, INC." or "USI ELECTRIC" on the front, with the model number and date code on the back.

Consumers who own these alarms should immediately contact Universal Security Instruments for a free replacement. Until the replacement alarm is installed, consumers should continue using the recalled alarm.

Hazard

Model MPC322S has 10-year sealed batteries and a manufacturing date code of 2017JUN09. Model MPC122S is a hardwired alarm with 10-year sealed battery backup and a manufacturing date code of 2017JUN02. The brand name "UNIVERSAL SECURITY INSTRUMENTS, INC." or "USI ELECTRIC" is printed on the front of the alarms above "Photoelectric Smoke & Fire + Carbon Monoxide Alarm." The model number and date code are printed on the back of the alarms.
