Wood Company Inc. and the CPSC are recalling 15-, 17-, and 20-cubic-foot upright freezers and 17-cubic-foot refrigerators sold under the brand names Amana, Crosley, Danby, Maytag, Whirlpool, and Wood's. The defrost heater coil inside these units can become exposed, creating a potential electrical shock hazard to consumers. In some cases, the exposed heater wire can melt or burn the unit's interior plastic food liner. The recalled units were manufactured between September 2002 and February 2004, with specific model numbers listed in the recall announcement.
Consumers with recalled Amana, Maytag, or Whirlpool freezers should contact Whirlpool to arrange a free in-home repair. For recalled Crosley, Danby, and Wood's freezers, no repair remedy is available. The record states that consumers should unplug and discontinue use of any unrepaired units.

The recalled single-door freezers and refrigerators are 15-, 17- and 20-cubic-foot Automatic Defrost Upright Freezers and 17-cubic-foot Automatic Defrost All-Refrigerators that can be converted into freezers. They were sold under the brand names Amana, Crosley, Danby, Maytag, Whirlpool and Wood's, which is written on the front of the unit. The manufacturer label with the model number and date of manufacture is located on the inside of the cabinet.
