CPSC, American Classic Announce Recall of Bicycle Wheels

Is my product affected?

American Classic road and mountain bike wheels

  • Brand American Classic, of Tampa, Fla.

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

American Classic bicycle rear wheels and hubs are being recalled because the hub can fail to engage properly, eliminating pedaling resistance and potentially causing riders to lose balance, fall, and suffer injuries. The recall affects all American Classic aftermarket rear wheels and hubs, as well as specific 2005 models from manufacturers including Fuji, Orbea, Felt, Fetish Cycles, Argon 18, and Motobecane. Recalled bikes made at the start of January 2005 have serial numbers on the rear hub shell that begin with the letter "S," printed on the center of the hub opposite the American Classic logo. Front wheels and hubs are not affected.

Consumers should stop using bicycle wheels with the recalled hubs and contact their local bicycle retailer for a free inspection. If the wheel is confirmed to be recalled, the dealer will provide a free repair.
