What happened

Child Craft drop-side cribs manufactured between 2000 and 2009 are being recalled because the drop-side hardware can fail and cause the drop-side to detach or fall. When this happens, infants or toddlers can become trapped in the resulting space and suffocate or strangle, or they can fall out of the crib and be injured. The problem can occur due to hardware failure, incorrect assembly, or wear and tear over time. The recall applies to specific model numbers with the pictured hardware style, identified by the Child Craft label on the frame indicating manufacture in Salem, Indiana or New Salisbury, Indiana.

Since Child Craft ceased operations in July 2009, no remedy is available for these cribs. According to the recall notice, parents and caregivers should stop using these cribs immediately, find a safe alternative sleeping environment for their baby, and destroy and discard the cribs. The source specifically warns consumers not to attempt to fix these cribs.

Hazard

The drop-side hardware can fail, causing the drop-side to detach from the crib or fall to the dropped position. When the drop side detaches, even partially, it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. Drop side incidents can also occur due to incorrect assembly and with age related wear and tear. Additionally, when drop-side hardware fails and/or disengages, an infant or toddler can be injured by falling out of the crib.

What should I do?

Child Craft ceased operations in July 2009 and a remedy is no longer available. CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Destroy and discard these cribs. Do not attempt to fix these cribs.
