What happened

Columbia Sportswear has recalled battery packs sold with certain heated jackets due to a cell defect that can cause the batteries to overheat and create a fire hazard. The affected battery packs are black, measure 3.25 inches long by 2.3 inches wide by 0.7 inches deep, and are marked with "Columbia" on top and "OMNI-HEAT™" on the bottom. The part number 054978-001 appears on the battery label. Two battery packs were included with specific jacket styles from Fall 2011, including the Mens Electro Amp™ Jacket (SM7864) and Circuit Breaker™ Softshell (SM7855), and the Womens Circuit Breaker™ Softshell (SL7856), Snow Hottie™ Jacket (SL7866), and Snow Hottie™ Parka (SL7853).

According to the recall, consumers with affected jackets should immediately check their battery packs to see if they match the recalled description. If the batteries are part of the recall, consumers should immediately remove the affected battery pack(s) from the jacket and contact Columbia Sportswear for a free replacement.
