What happened

Fresh Foods Manufacturing Co. is voluntarily recalling approximately 8,757 pounds of ready-to-eat salad products produced between April 9 and April 12, 2018, due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. The recalled products include Caesar Salad with Chicken, Chicken and Bacon Salad, Garden Salad with Chicken, and Chef Salad with Ham, Turkey, and Hard-Boiled Egg, all sold under the "Great to Go by Market District" label with sell-by dates from April 13–16, 2018. These items were distributed to retail locations in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The contamination was traced to romaine lettuce supplied to the manufacturer. As of the announcement, there were no confirmed reports of illness from these products.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially dangerous bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps within an average of 34 days of exposure. While most people recover within a week, some develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure that can be particularly serious in children under 5 and older adults and is characterized by easy bruising, paleness, and decreased urine output. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider, and those experiencing symptoms of the condition should seek emergency medical care immediately.
