BMW of North America is recalling certain 2021 model year BMW, MINI, Rolls Royce, and Toyota Supra vehicles because the passenger seat belt retractor may deactivate early and not function properly during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. The affected vehicles include various models such as the 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, M-Series, X-Series, Z4, MINI models, Rolls Royce Ghost, Phantom, and Cullinan, as well as the Toyota Supra. This defect fails to meet federal safety standards for occupant crash protection.
Owners of affected vehicles received notification letters on September 3, 2021. Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors and replace them if necessary at no charge to the owner. Consumers should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 (BMW), 1-866-825-1525 (MINI), 1-877-877-3735 (Rolls Royce), or 1-888-270-9371 (Toyota) to schedule an inspection and remedy.

Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors (including the seat belts) and, if necessary, replace the retractors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. As such, these assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
