BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2020-2021 BMW 228i, 228i xDrive, and M235i xDrive vehicles because the sunroof may continue closing after the vehicle is shut off, creating a potential injury risk. The issue occurs when a driver initiates automatic closure of the sunroof and then changes the vehicle key status to "off" or "lock," causing the sunroof to keep closing beyond the intended point. This condition violates federal safety standards for power-operated window systems.
BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles, and authorized BMW dealers will update the sunroof electronic coding software at no charge to resolve the issue. The recall began on April 16, 2021.
