What happened

BMW is recalling certain 2020 model year vehicles including the X3, X4, 330i, M340i, 840i Gran Coupe, M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, M8 Gran Coupe, and 840i xDrive Convertible. The front seat belt buckle sensors in these vehicles may incorrectly identify a belted occupant as unbelted, which could cause air bags and seat belt pretensioners to deploy improperly during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

BMW dealers will inspect and replace the front seat belt buckles at no cost to owners. The recall began May 18, 2020. Affected consumers should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule an inspection and replacement appointment.
