What happened

BMW is recalling certain 2007-2012 X5 and 2008-2012 X6 models equipped with passenger front air bag inflators that may explode due to propellant degradation from exposure to heat and humidity. The affected inflators were used as interim replacement parts in previous Takata recalls and contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate propellant. If an inflator explodes, it may send sharp metal fragments into the driver or other occupants, potentially causing serious injury or death.

Owners should not drive their vehicles until the recall remedy is completed. BMW will notify owners and replace the passenger front air bag at no charge through authorized dealers. The recall began on March 11, 2020. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.
