Honda is recalling certain 2001-2011 model year vehicles including Accord, Civic, CR-V, Element, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, and Acura 3.2CL, 3.2TL, and MDX models. The driver frontal air bag inflator in these vehicles may explode due to propellant degradation caused by long-term exposure to high humidity and temperature cycling. If an inflator explodes, it can send sharp metal fragments that may seriously injure or kill the driver or other occupants.
Honda will notify owners and replace the driver frontal air bag inflator at no charge through authorized dealers. The recall began on August 12, 2019. Owners can contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 to schedule service. Honda's internal recall numbers for this issue are Q5A and Y58.
