What happened

HME, Inc. is recalling certain 2017-2018 model 1871 vehicles equipped with Whelen accessory brake lights. Depending on the vehicle's specific wiring, the brake lights may falsely illuminate without the brake pedal being pressed. False brake light illumination can confuse other drivers and increase the risk of a crash. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108 concerning lamps and associated equipment.

HME will notify owners about the recall, which began on March 6, 2019. Dealers will replace the Whelen brake lights at no cost to owners. Affected consumers should contact HME's customer service at 1-616-534-1463 to arrange the replacement.
