Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling certain 2017-2019 Outlander, Outlander Sport, Outlander PHEV, and Eclipse Cross vehicles equipped with a Forward Collision Mitigation system. The recalled vehicles have a software defect in the FCM-ECU (Electronic Control Unit) that may cause the system to brake for longer than necessary, even after it no longer detects a pedestrian. This extended braking can prompt drivers to apply additional braking themselves, resulting in rapid deceleration that increases the risk of being hit from behind.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by MMNA, and dealers will reprogram the FCM-ECU software with updated software at no cost. The recall began on October 16, 2018. Owners can contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820 with questions or to schedule the repair, and can reference recall number SR-18-007.
