BMW of North America is recalling certain 2018 and 2019 BMW and MINI vehicles totaling 5,309 units due to a crankshaft sensor equipped with incorrect firmware. The sensor may fail to properly process input from the crankshaft reluctor ring, which can cause the vehicle to stall and increase the risk of a crash. The affected vehicles include multiple BMW models (540d xDrive, 230i, M240i, X2, X1, 330i, 340i, 530i, 540i, 530e, 640i xDrive Gran Turismo, 330e, 430i, 440i, and 740i) as well as MINI Cooper, Countryman, and Clubman models with various trim levels and drivetrain options.
BMW will notify owners and replace the crankshaft sensor free of charge through authorized dealers. The recall began on September 6, 2018, with an expansion announced on September 12, 2018.
