Mazda is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 CX-7, CX-9, and Mazda6 vehicles because the front passenger side air bag inflator may rupture during deployment in a crash. If the inflator ruptures, metal fragments could strike vehicle occupants and cause serious injury or death. The recall affects vehicles sold or ever registered in specific geographic zones determined by model year, with higher concentration in warmer and more humid climates. The rupture risk results from propellant degradation that occurs after prolonged exposure to heat and humidity.
Mazda will replace the front passenger side air bag inflator with an alternate inflator at no cost to owners. Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda began notifying owners on October 4, 2017. Owners should contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 to schedule the replacement, referencing recall number 1317F.
