What happened

BMW is recalling certain X5 and X6 vehicles from model years 2007 through 2012 that were originally sold or registered in specific geographic regions across the United States and U.S. territories. The vehicles are equipped with front passenger air bag inflators that may rupture during a crash due to propellant degradation caused by long-term exposure to high humidity and temperature changes. If the inflator ruptures, metal fragments could strike vehicle occupants and cause serious injury or death.

BMW will notify owners and replace the front passenger air bag inflator or air bag module at no cost. An interim letter was mailed in March 2017, and owners will receive a second notice when replacement parts become available. Owners should not drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Affected owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
