What happened

BMW of North America is recalling certain 2011 model year 528i, 528xi, 535i, 535xi, 550i, and 550xi vehicles manufactured between March 1, 2010, and August 31, 2011. The affected vehicles may have received a replacement Sensor Cluster Unit (SCU) during a service visit that contains an acceleration sensor with incorrect programming. Due to this programming error, the SCU may fail to accurately determine whether air bags, safety belt pre-tensioners, and active head restraints should be activated during a crash, which could result in inadequate deployment depending on crash severity and increase injury risk.

BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles, and authorized BMW dealers will replace the defective SCU at no charge. The recall began on December 16, 2016. Owners of potentially affected vehicles should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
