Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling certain 2008–2012 C-Class, E-Class, GLK-Class, and SLS AMG vehicles equipped with front passenger air bag inflator modules that may rupture during deployment. The recall affects vehicles originally sold or registered in specific geographic zones: 2012 models sold in Zone A (Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands); 2009 models in Zone B (Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia); and 2008 models in the remaining states. An inflator rupture may cause metal fragments to strike vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
The rupture hazard results from propellant degradation after long-term exposure to humidity and temperature cycling. Mercedes-Benz will notify owners and replace the front passenger air bag modules free of charge. An interim notification was sent in March 2017, and additional notices began mailing in October 2018 and will continue as replacement parts become available. Affected owners should contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-877-496-3691.
