What happened

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling certain Thomas Built Buses and other transit bus models from model years 1998-2002. The recall affects the emergency door handle mechanism, where the stem connecting the outside handle to the door opening mechanism can corrode and potentially detach. If this occurs, the emergency door could be delayed from opening during an evacuation, which may increase the risk of injury to bus occupants.

According to the recall notice, affected vehicle owners will be notified and dealers will replace the corroded stems or protect them against corrosion at no charge. Owners received an initial notice on July 28, 2016, and a second notice on December 9, 2016. Owners of affected buses should contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 to arrange service, and should reference recall number FL-713.

What should I do?

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will either replace the stems or protect them against corrosion, free of charge. An interim notice was sent to owners on July 28, 2016. A second notice was mailed to owners on December 9, 2016 Parts are available. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is FL-713.
