Ford is recalling specific model year vehicles from 2005-2011, including the Ranger, Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ, Edge, Lincoln MKX, GT, and Mustang, originally sold or registered in certain high-humidity states and territories (Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) or in certain other states including Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, depending on model year. The passenger frontal air bag inflator may rupture during a crash due to propellant degradation from long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes, potentially causing metal fragments to strike vehicle occupants and result in serious injury or death.
Ford will notify owners and replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator free of charge at authorized dealers. The company mailed interim letters on July 15, 2016, informing owners that parts were not yet available at that time, and owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair is completed. For more information, owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, referencing recall number 19S01.
