What happened

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling certain 2014-2016 Freightliner Custom Chassis XCP chassis used in motor home applications that were manufactured between April 26, 2013, and January 15, 2015. These vehicles may have power steering fluid that reaches temperatures exceeding the hose material's rated limits, causing the hose to fail and result in sudden loss of power steering fluid and assist, making the vehicle significantly harder to steer at low speeds and increasing crash risk.

To remedy the defect, dealers will replace the affected power steering hose with one that has a higher temperature rating at no cost to owners. Owners should contact Daimler Trucks North America customer service at 1-800-547-0712, referencing recall number FL-702, to arrange the replacement. The recall notifications began July 22, 2016.

Hazard

Loss of power steering assist would result in increased difficulty to steer the vehicle in either direction at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

What should I do?

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering hose with a hose that has a higher temperature rating, free of charge. The recall began on July 22, 2016. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's recall number for this campaign is FL-702.

Details from the source

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Freightliner Custom Chassis XCP chassis manufactured from April 26, 2013, through January 15, 2015. The power steering fluid temperature may exceed the power steering hose material ratings on some rear engine chassis built with certain 18,000lb and 20,000lb-load capacity front axles used in motor home applications. This can cause the hose to fail, resulting in a sudden loss of power steering fluid and power assist.
