General Motors is recalling approximately 5.9 million vehicles from model years 1997-2008, including Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo, Malibu, and Malibu Classic; Oldsmobile Alero and Intrigue; and Pontiac Grand Am and Grand Prix models. The problem involves the ignition switch, which may move out of the run position due to weight on the key ring, road conditions, or jarring events, causing the engine to turn off and preventing airbags from deploying in a crash.
To address this hazard, GM will notify owners and dealers will install key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys at no charge. The recall began September 9, 2014, under GM recall number 14350. Until the recall work is completed, customers should remove all items from their key rings except the ignition key and should also remove the key fob from the key ring if applicable.
