What happened

Mazda is recalling certain 2014 Mazda3 vehicles manufactured between June 12, 2013 and December 18, 2013, and 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured between May 20, 2013 and December 4, 2013, all equipped with a 2.5L engine and regenerative engine braking system. When driving these vehicles in heavy rain or through deep puddles, the alternator belt may slip, causing the Power Control Module to incorrectly assume the charging system has failed.

When the PCM incorrectly detects a charging system failure, the vehicle will stop charging, which can result in poor acceleration, loss of steering assist, loss of windshield wiper operation, and possible engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the PCM with updated software at no charge. Owners should contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500 and reference recall number 7314D to schedule service.
