What happened

New Flyer of America is recalling certain model year 2010 heavy-duty transit buses, including the D35LFR, D40LFR, D60LFR, DE40LFR, DE60LFR, XD35, XDE35, and XDE40 models manufactured between September 30, 2010 and June 3, 2011. These buses are equipped with Cummins ISB, ISL, ISC, or ISX diesel engines and contain a defective V-band clamp assembly with part numbers Q187684, Q187685, or Q187686. The T-bolt in these clamps can fracture and fail under stress, causing the clamp to loosen and the inlet or outlet sections to disconnect from the diesel oxidation catalyst/diesel particulate filter housing.

If the inlet or outlet sections disconnect, hot exhaust gases can vent before exiting the tailpipe, creating a risk of combustion and fire. If both clamps fail, the DOC/DPF housing may detach completely in some applications, creating a road hazard. The safety recall began on September 1, 2011. Affected owners should contact Cummins at 1-812-377-5000 or New Flyer Customer Services at 1-204-934-4876 to have the repairs performed free of charge by authorized Cummins dealers.

Hazard

IF THE INLET OR OUTLET SECTIONS DISCONNECT, HOT EXHAUST GASES CAN VENT PRIOR TO EXITING THE TAILPIPE, CREATING THE RISK OF COMBUSTION AND A FIRE. IF BOTH CLAMPS FAIL, THERE IS A RISK IN SOME APPLICATIONS THAT THE DOC/DPF HOUSING MAY DETACH COMPLETELY, CREATING A ROAD HAZARD.

What should I do?

NEW FLYER IS WORKING WITH CUMMINS TO IDENTIFY AND NOTIFY OWNERS OF THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. REPAIRS WILL BE PERFORMED BY AUTHORIZED CUMMINS DEALERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 1, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CUMMINS AT 1-812-377-5000 OR NEW FLYER CUSTOMER SERVICES AT 1-204-934-4876.
