What happened

Hewlett-Packard and Compaq are recalling certain lithium-ion rechargeable battery packs used in notebook computers manufactured between December 2004 and June 2006. The batteries may overheat, creating a risk of fire and burns. Twenty-eight incidents have been reported related to this hazard. The affected batteries were included with 15 specific notebook computer models, including HP Pavilion dv1000, dv8000, and zd8000 series; Compaq Presario v2000; and various HP Compaq models (nc6110, nc6120, nc6220, nc6230, nx6110, nx6120, nx4800, and nx9600).

To identify an affected battery pack, consumers must remove it from the notebook computer and check the date code printed on an adhesive label on the inner surface. The manufacturer is taking voluntary corrective actions, though the specific details of the remedy are not provided in this record.

Details from the source

There are four different battery pack designs, each of which is compatible with a subset of the listed notebook computers. The date code is embedded in a code printed on an adhesive label affixed to the inner surface of the battery pack. (The battery pack must be removed from the notebook computer to allow access to this label.) The vast majority of affected battery packs will have been included with the 15 models of notebook computer to which they belonged. These notebook computers were last placed on the market around early 2006, and it is very likely that all packaging will since have been discarded.
