Hewlett-Packard and Compaq lithium ion rechargeable battery packs used in various notebook computer models pose a fire risk because the batteries can overheat. The affected products include battery packs compatible with multiple HP Pavilion models (dv2000, dv2500, dv2700, dv6000, dv6500, dv6700, dv9000, dv9500, dv9700, dx6000, dx6500, and dx6700) and Compaq Presario models (A900, C700, F500, F700, V3000, V3500, V3700, V6000, V6500, and V6700). The batteries are black rectangular packs with safety markings, and the date code identifying which batch a battery belongs to is printed on an adhesive label on the inner surface of the pack.

There are four different battery pack designs, each of which is compatible with a subset of the listed notebook computers. The date code is embedded in a code printed on an adhesive label affixed to the inner surface of the battery pack. They are black and rectangular in appearance with safety markings and labelling.
