What happened

Volvo is recalling certain 2008-2009 model year S80, V70, XC60, and XC70 vehicles equipped with specific engine types due to a software error in the Fan Control Module that may cause the engine cooling fan to stop working permanently. When this occurs, the air conditioning performance may decrease and the vehicle's warning system should alert the driver to reduce speed through a yellow lamp and message, followed by a red warning lamp if the engine continues to heat up. However, in some cases the driver may not notice these warnings, potentially leading to rapidly boiling coolant, coolant loss, engine damage, or engine breakdown that could result in accidents.

Volvo has taken voluntary corrective measures to address this issue, though the specific nature of the remedy and the date it took effect are not specified in the recall notice. The recall applies to vehicles equipped with certain engine types, with some exclusions for manual transmission vehicles in specific regions and markets. Consumers should contact Volvo directly or refer to the detailed list of affected vehicles and engine specifications provided in the attached documentation for information about what actions to take.

Hazard

The product poses a risk of injuries because the engine cooling fan may permanently stop working due to a software error in the Fan Control Module (FCM). If the fan stops it may cause reduced Air Condition (AC) performance and the driver will normally be informed of the increased coolant temperature by a yellow information lamp and the following written message: "reduce speed". However, if the engine temperature continues to rise, a red warning lamp will light up and text instructions will indicate that the car should be stopped safely. In this specific failure mode, the deviation may lead to a rapid increase in coolant temperature and the driver may not notice the indication lamps and the text messages. The situation could result in boiling coolant, loss of coolant and eventually engine damage or engine break down, which may lead to accidents.
