AT manual control lever bolt in Mitsubishi SUV

  • Brand Mitsubishi

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

A bolt welded to the manual control lever on the automatic transmission side of certain Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero SUVs may crack and loosen. When this happens, the adjustment nut can loosen and the transmission cable can shift position, causing the shift lever to show one position (such as "P" for Park) while the transmission is actually in a different gear (such as "R" for Reverse). This mismatch can prevent the engine from starting or, in severe cases, cause the bolt to break completely, disconnecting the control cable entirely and making the vehicle unable to operate.

The recall applies to Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero models with automatic transmissions produced between November 21, 2006 and March 22, 2007, identified by specific VIN/chassis number ranges. The importer has undertaken voluntary corrective actions to address this issue. The source document does not specify what remedy or action affected consumers should take.

Hazard

There is a possibility that the bolt welded to the manual control lever (lower) at the AT side may be cracked, which may result in loosening of the adjust nut and moving of the cable. This can then lead to a different positioning of the shift lever itself from actual A/T shift position. (For instance: Shift lever position is “P”, but actually A/T shift position is “R”). In this case, customer tries to start the engine, but engine cannot start because of “R” position .In a worst-case scenario, the bolt might get broken and then, the control cable might be disconnected from the fixing location, resulting in no operation of A/T shift and inability for driving.
