  • Brand Generac Power Systems, of Waukesha, Wis.

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Generac is recalling approximately 6,500 and 8,000 watt portable generators across multiple models due to a hazard where an unlocked handle can pinch consumers' fingers against the generator frame during movement. The affected generators include unit types XT8000E, XT8000EFI, GP6500, GP6500E, GP8000E, HomeLink 6500E, and DR models PRO 6500M and PRO 6500E. These gasoline-powered generators have a flip-up pin-lock handle designed to help move the two-wheeled units, and the recalled models have specific serial number ranges listed by Generac.

Consumers can identify whether their generator is affected by checking the unit type on the front of the product and consulting the serial number ranges provided on Generac's website at www.generac.com/service-support/product-support-lookup. According to the recall, affected consumers should immediately stop using the recalled portable generators unless they insert the locking pin to secure the handle before and after moving the generator, and they should contact Generac for a free repair kit.
