Is my product affected?

Sodium Hydroxide, Lye/Caustic Soda and Potassium Hydroxide, Caustic Potash Ash

  • Brand Belle Chemical, of Billings, Mont.

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Belle Chemical is recalling sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide products sold in 4-ounce, 8-ounce, and 1-pound sizes because the packaging is not child-resistant as required by law, and the labels do not comply with federal labeling requirements. These products are used for soaps, cleaners, water treatment, food preparation, pH buffering, and metal dissolution. The sodium hydroxide products come in black resealable bags (4-ounce and 8-ounce sizes) or a white resealable bag (1-pound size), while potassium hydroxide products come in black resealable bags. The non-child-resistant packaging poses a risk of chemical burns and skin and eye irritation.

According to the recall notice, consumers who have these products should immediately store them in a safe location out of reach of children and contact Belle Chemical for a free replacement with child-resistant packaging and corrected labeling.

Hazard

The products contain sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide which must be in child resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). The packaging of the products is not child resistant, posing a risk of chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes. In addition, the label on the product violates the Federal Hazardous Substance Act (FHSA) by omitting the word "poison" for poisonous chemicals and the mandatory hazard statement on the front on the packaging.

What should I do?

Consumers should immediately store the recalled products in a safe location out of reach of children and contact Belle Chemical for a free replacement child-resistant packaging and label to put on the product.
