Universal Security Instruments is recalling certain battery-operated smoke alarms because an internal switch misalignment can prevent the alarms from activating properly during a fire. The recall affects 10-year battery-operated ionization smoke and fire alarms with model numbers MI3050S and MI3050SB manufactured between January 19, 2015 and July 11, 2016. The alarms are white, 5½ inches in diameter, and labeled "Universal" and "Smoke & Fire Alarm" on the front cover.
To determine if your alarm is affected, check the model number and date code on the label on the back of the alarm. According to the recall, consumers should immediately press the test button on their alarm to see if it sounds. If the alarm sounds, no further action is needed. If the alarm does not sound when tested, consumers should immediately contact Universal Security for a replacement, with additional instructions available on the firm's website.
