What happened

Creative Technologies Corp. is recalling approximately 50,000 pasta machines due to a safety defect in the lid's cutoff switch. The affected models are the Takka Pasta and Dough machine (model X1000) and the Pasta Express machines (models X2000, X3000, and X4000) with serial numbers up to 78209. The machines were sold between 1989 and 1992 for $90 to $200 through department stores, mail order catalogs, and warehouse clubs. When the safety cutoff switch fails to activate, consumers' fingers can be severely injured or severed if placed into the mixing bowl while the machine unexpectedly operates. The company is aware of 11 incidents resulting in nine injuries including cut, crushed, and severed fingers.

According to the recall notice, consumers should stop using the affected pasta machines immediately. Creative Technologies will provide a free replacement lid and will help consumers determine whether their machine is subject to the recall program. Consumers can contact the company to verify their machine's eligibility using the model and serial number found on a label on the bottom of the machine.
